Welcome to Forever
Spring Botanical Garden
A botanic garden based in the rich tropical rainforests of Northern Thailand, devoted to researching, conserving and cultivating rare tropical plants.
In one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in Asia
...which is under threat
Unfortunately, the Convention of Biological Diversity established that Thailand’s ecosystem is in constant peril thanks to socio-economic activities, endangering at least 5 amphibians, 33 reptilians, 121 animals on land, 184 bird breeds, 218 fish varieties and over 1,131 plants.
Around 53.35% of the country was covered by lavish forests in 1961. However, these green areas decreased to 32.1% by 2009. A considerable number of wild plant varieties vanished, many of which were endemic to the Toe Daeng peat swamp forest.
Moreover, hundreds of thousands of wild orchids were illegally removed between 2003 and 2005 and sold to private farms and collectors. Thailand is a natural reserve of world rice strains, enduring a rapid erosion of genetic rice diversity resulting from urban rice paddy agriculture and farmers’ preference for prolific species (with less protection of native crops). A great amount of indigenous cultivated plants became extinct after the destruction of areas used for ancient farming by natural disasters, dam establishment, as well as urban and industrial development.
